Ground Works

As we are in the weekend leading up to the Fourth of July celebrations I will keep it short and sweet.  Just a quick reminder to be safe out there during these busy days.  Trail congestion is common and many of us are sharing outdoor space.  I know when I come across other folks out there I can only be responsible for myself and my own horse.  I like to give a wide berth to others and am extra careful when dogs are present.

Even though I am confident in my riding abilities, I know there are times when the safest option is to dismount and offer guidance from the ground.  It are times such as these when my groundwork practice really pays off.  Having the ability to put myself between my horse and the perceived trouble can really diffuse a situation.  I remain safe and I am able to offer direct guidance and support to my horse.  Moments like these are quite beneficial in building trust between horse and rider.

After bringing confidence and a sense of calm I am able to re-mount and ride off safely.  In the past I have "toughed it out" in the saddle and spent the next hour just trying to get my horse's mind back.  I now know to just get over myself and dismount.  It may not be the cowboy way, but I  am always looking for the best way to support my horses.

The pay off that comes with comforting from the ground can be perfect for growing a bond.  To a horse, removing the stress that comes with having a rider can be just what is needed to calm their minds.

So as you ride out during these busy days remember to know your horse as well as yourself.  If the time comes that you don't quite feel safe riding trough a situation, get off.  Everything done around a horse is a teaching moment.  Don't see it as a failure, see it as a win.  A win that keeps you healthy and happy.  Leaving you able to re-mount and get on with enjoying your ride.

Have a safe and happy Fourth!  I will look for you out there and offer a big smile.

Happy Trails!
